Jean-Antoine Watteau (1684-1721) was a French painter and architect.

As a child, he suffered beatings from his alcoholic and violent father. It is assumed that his early onset of pulmonary tuberculosis, known as phisy at the time, was due to this. This trauma was to have a major influence on his painting.

His family recognized his talent early on and placed him with a painter, whose identity his biographers have doubts about. He moved to Paris at a young age, to Saint Germain des Prés. He earns his living copying paintings.

The painter Gillot took him under his wing and became his master. It was with Gillot that he discovered the pictorial theme of fêtes galantes, and made it the heart of his painting. Early in his career, he produced history paintings to gain public recognition and recognition from his peers.

He opposed Charles Le Brun during the quarrel at the Académie Royale between the Rubenists and the Poussinists, and ardently defended the prevalence of color over drawing.

Pierre Crozat invites him to the Château de Montmorency, which is, ironically, Charles Le Brun's former estate. He then trained in architecture with Claude Audran III.
