Style and technique of artist Charles Angrand
Charles Angrand is a French painter, who produced neo-realist, symbolist, pointillist works, and some also fitting in with the Art Incohérent founded by Jules Lévy. He produces prints, drawings and oils on canvas.
The life of Charles Angrand
Charles Théophile Angrand (1854 - 1926), was a 19th-century French painter.
Born in Rouen, Charles Angrand was a painter of the school of the same name. He first studied at the École normale d'instituteurs in Rouen, then became a secondary school teacher. As a young man, he visited the Camille Corot exhibition at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and decided to become a painter. He studied with Gustave Morin, and continued his career in Paris, being appointed as a repetiteur at the Lycée Chaptal. There he met Georges Seurat, who became both a friend and an influence. He plays a major role in founding the Société des artistes indépendants, which organizes the Salon des Indépendants. He also had the opportunity to get to know Maximilien Luce, Van Gogh, Paul Signac, and other artists with whom he befriended and who were to influence his work. Some art historians believe that Charles Angrand will have a clear influence on Van Gogh's production.
At the same time, he becomes involved in a libertarian magazine with Luce.
Angrand uses many techniques during his life, studying the Conté pencil technique in particular, and will eventually become interested in pastel alone at the end of his life.
Charles Angrand's imprint on his period
Charles Angrand made a name for himself in the 19th-century art world, devoting most of his work to exploring techniques. He is not very well known in Europe today, but his works are currently enjoying great success on the auction market. He remains one of the most important members of the Rouen School to this day.
Recognizing the artist's signature
Not all of Angrand's works are signed. They may be at the bottom of the painting, usually with the inscription " CH. ANGRAND ", but if you think you own one, it's best to have it appraised to be sure of its originality.
