Artist's rating and value

A student of Glaize, author of a significant pictorial output, Théodule Ribot's name is little known. Yet the artist is quoted on the art market and attracts many collectors. Indeed, at auction, Ribot's paintings are commonplace and popular. His oils on canvas are his most highly-rated works, and can fetch tens of thousands of euros at auction, like his oil on canvas La gourde vide, dating from 1876, sold for €160,000 in 2015.

Artist's style and technique

Théodule Ribot was a pupil of Glaize, using the same pictorial processes that still belong to the Académie. He was part of the realist movement, producing mainly oil paintings in fairly dark shades. He painted genre scenes and still lifes.

Théodule Ribot, his life, his work

Théodule Ribot was born in 1823 in Normandy.

At first, he worked on linear drawing alone, then entered the Arts et Métier school in Châlons, and had to work on the side to support himself.

He then moved to Paris, where he studied in the studio of painter Antoine-Barthélémy Glaize. After a trip to Algeria to supervise construction sites, he worked tirelessly on his return to France, producing Watteau copies to be sent to America by day, and working on his own production by night. He presented his personal works at the Salon of 1861, where the public took notice. He frequented Fantin-Latour, Eugène Boudin, Pierre Puvis de Chavanne and Claude Monet, who organized a banquet in his honor when he was weak and symbolically presented him with a medal.

He died in Paris in 1891, leaving two children, one of whom was Germain-Théodore Ribot, also a painter.

The legacy of Théodule Ribot

Ribot is not a well-known artist to the general public today; his peers are more widely recognized. However, his works are highly valued at auction.
