Style and technique of artist Feodor Rokotov
Feodor Rokotov is first and foremost a portraitist. He portrayed important men and women of his time. His preferred medium remains oil on canvas, although he also produces drawings and prints.
Feodor Rokotov, forgotten portraitist
Feodor Stapanovich Rokotov was a Russian painter born in 1736, into a relatively poor family subject to Russian nobles - including Count Nikita Ivanovicth Panin. He was in fact a serf (this category still existed in Russia at the time of the painter's birth), for the Repnine family, which included the aforementioned count.
He managed to enter the Imperial Academy in St. Petersburg, then to buy his freedom around 1750. His talent was recognized, and he was elected academician in 1765, but he did not hold this position for very long, preferring to devote himself fully to painting.
He ended his career and his life in Moscow, where he had the opportunity to portray many aristocrats, as well as Emperor Paul I of Russia or Empress Catherine II.
Rokotov's imprint on his period
Rokotov left his mark on his era in Russia, France and Europe, although the general public doesn't remember him much today. Nevertheless, his technical mastery and personal history are of interest to collectors : his works are highly sought-after on the auction market.
Recognizing the Feodor Rokotov signature
Often, Feodor Rokotov's paintings are signed at the bottom left of the painting. He signs with his first and last name, often in a dark tone ; sometimes with the city where he painted the picture, or the date.
