Style and technique of Jorge Borras

Jorge Borras is a Spanish artist born in 1952 in Benicarlo, settled in France. He works in painting, sculpture, engraving and medals. His recurring themes are women (nudes, ballerinas, bathers) but above all wild animals in motion, especially panthers.

The forms are dynamic, often in tension, and the sculpted or painted material highlights the vitality of the body or animal, while retaining a figurative elegance rather than pure abstraction.

In his sculptures, space is often open, and the figures seem captured in a moment of movement or transition (for example, animals ready to pounce). The painting follows a similar logic of immediacy.

His visual approach blends classicism (figurative model, anatomy) and contemporary expression (movement, tension), giving him an identifiable, distinctive style.

The main media used are bronze sculpture, with careful casting, painting on canvas or panel as well as engraving and medals. The human figure is treated with care for drawing and anatomy, but also with freedom of pose and visual identity.

His painted body of work allows him to treat the human figure with care for drawing and anatomy, but also with freedom of pose and visual breath. Painting allows her to explore the female subject within a visual framework that truncates immobility for implicit expectation or mobility.

The artist has produced series for the Monnaie de Paris and book covers, demonstrating a mastery of reduced formats and the gravity of the motif. The wild animal or female body is often stylized but remains recognizable, dynamic is favored over static pose, which implies a treatment of surface and form aimed at movement and expression.

The career of Jorge Borras

Jorge Borras was born in 1952 in Benicarlo (Valencian Community, Spain). He trained at the Sant Jordi Royal Catalan Academy of Fine Arts in Barcelona, where he studied sculpture under Luisa Granero Sierra, and painting and drawing under Francisco Ribera Gomez.

He was passionate about drawing from the age of 10, and held his first solo exhibition at the age of 20, in 1972. After completing his studies, he moved to France, joining Parisian artistic circles and frequenting salons (Salon d'automne, Salon des artistes français, Salon des indépendants).

His animal corpus reflects a certain influence of 20th-century animal sculptors such as Pompon or Petersen, but also older artists such as Barye or Cain.

He was awarded the " Arts-Sciences-Lettres " medal. His work is multi-media, and centered on two major themes : women and animals. Between 1990 and 2000, he consolidated his production of animal sculptures and engravings. In 2019, he was named Chevalier de l'Ordre National du Mérite (France). The majority of lots on the auction market today are signed bronzes.

Market segmentation and artist rating

Bronze sculptures are the artist's main segment at auction, and signed and numbered bronzes are the most sought-after products.

Medium to large bronzes (25 - 60 cm in height) are in the intermediate segment, while small works (engravings and bronzes under 30 cm constitute the entry segment.

The market for auction sales is mainly French but also international at times. Valuation factors include the artist's signature, the edition number (e.g. 1/8, 6/8), the original patina, the founder's stamp, and presence in exhibition catalogs. Signature subjects, i.e. women and animals, are also an important factor. More modest works, such as engravings and small canvases, can be negotiated for a few thousand euros, while good-sized bronze pieces range from a few thousand to 10,000 euros.

More than 650 results from works that have passed through the sales process are currently recorded. Recently, his bronze Au réveil, 2005 was estimated at €5,000-6,000. His bronze Guépard guettant, 2009, was estimated at €3,000 to €5,000. A signed etching or acrylic in a more modest format is now estimated at between €800 and €1,000.

The fact that the highest prices reach around €10,000 - €12,000 suggests that the artist is in a medium to moderate-sized market zone. The market for Borras is thus accessible, but contains both ends : the small format/common model on the one hand, and the quality limited edition bronze on the other.

A well-sized, signed, numbered and unpublished work can reach the upper end of the €5,000 - €6,000 range or even higher, but does not (yet) rival the blue-chip artists.

The market remains sensitive to condition, format and proof of edition, with a downside risk for small formats or unnumbered works.
