The style and technique of Salvador Dali

Salvador Dali, more famous for his paintings, nevertheless produced many statues and worked enormously with bronze. Whatever the material used for his works, they are all part of the surrealist movement, of which he is one of the leading exponents.

Salvador Dali, an artist on all fronts

Salvador Dali (1904-1984), a Spanish artist, has become a key figure in art history. Born in Catalonia, he was noticed from the age of 14, and his works were already being exhibited in Spain, where he took engraving classes.

Dali turned to art following a trauma  when he was five, his parents took him to the grave of his older brother, who had died before he was born, and was also named Salvador. His father is said to have told him that he was his reincarnation. Dali was traumatized and believed he was a failed copy of his brother.

He soon left Catalonia to attend art classes in Madrid. There he met Federico Garcia Lorca as well as Luis Bunel and Joan Miro. The latter advised him to continue his art studies in Paris, which he did.

In 1929, he was already part of the Surrealist movement himself, inventing the artistic technique of " paranoid-criticism ". His career really took off during the Second World War, when forced to flee Europe, he settled in New York and began to earn a very good living. After the war, he returned to Spain with his wife Gala, and underwent a further artistic change. His inspiration was more religious, drawn from Catholicism.

He had a narcissistic and megalomaniac tendency in his works, which pleased and made a lot of noise, but also annoyed a lot.

He himself created his own museum at the end of his life, conceived by him as a work, and had very cordial relations with the dictator Franco, which also irritated part of the art world and the public.

Dali's imprint on his time

Dali, in Europe as well as across the Atlantic and indeed around the world, is known to all. He left a unique legacy in the history of art and turned the art of the 20th century upside down.He worked with all possible materials, created canvases, jewelry, sculptures, in bronze but also in silver and clay, took part in the creation of public buildings, wrote, engraved, and was also a screenwriter. He experimented with all branches of art.

His production of sculptures, especially bronzes, is very substantial. Here, too, he brought about his own little revolution. Le violon d'Ingres, sold at auction, expresses this remarkably well.
