Style and technique by artist Georges Chauvel
Georges Chauvel is a French sculptor of the early 20th century, who blends modern figurative with classical references. He was part of the post-First World War " retour à l'ordre " movement, which consisted of a modernity tempered by the use of classical, stylized and balanced forms.
His work shows a strong orientation towards mythological, allegorical and feminine themes, with busts, female figures, nudes, decorative motifs and beings in motion.
He works with an Art Deco aesthetic for some of his works, with elegance, geometric stylization and balance between straight and curved lines. His elegance is linear : female silhouettes are treated with grace, a certain economy of decoration without complete neutralization of form.
His favored mediums are bronze and sometimes stone or plaster to produce mostly preparatory models. He used brown or dark patinas to enhance the surface and modeling, typical of Art Deco bronzes.
His plaster models were then transposed into bronze, and several lots feature plaster sculptures signed " G. Chauvel ". He paid great attention to working with skin, folds and hair, but purification was relative and stylization prevailed over outrageous naturalism.
He created large-scale monuments and public works, including war memorials, and large-scale figures, requiring a mastery of structure, pedestals and interaction with the site of the work.
After 1945, he also worked as a restorer for works at the Château de Versailles.
The life of Georges Chauvel
Georges Félicien Eugène Joseph Chauvel (Elbeuf, 1886 - 1962, Val-Saint-Germain) was a figurative sculptor of the first half of the 20th century, who first trained for three years at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, in Alphonse Guilloux's studio.
In 1917, he exhibited Le lanceur de grenades, acquired by Henri Leblanc, and a replica was given to New Zealand soldiers. In 1919, he exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants, marking the start of his public career.
While his body of work for private use (bronze, plaster, ceramic and terracotta sculptures) was relatively small, he worked on larger-scale public projects such as war memorials in the 1920s.
Among his most famous works is Femme endormie (1934, marble, 100 x 200 x 58 cm, 1600 kg). He also created public sculptures in Paris (Nu féminin marchant dans le jardin de Reuilly) and other cities.
After 1945, he participated in the restoration of statues in the park of the Château de Versailles, and also worked as a creator of models for ceramics.
His sculptures can be found in various museums (Musée de la Piscine in Roubaix, Musée des Années Trente, Musée de l'Armée in Paris). He is buried at the Val-Saint-Germain cemetery, and his tomb was surmounted by one of his works, which has been abandoned or stolen according to sources.
His work has also been photographed, notably by Marc Vaux.
