Period

Xuan Nhi Luong (1914 - 2006) is a painter who worked in the context of the continuity of modern Vietnamese painting stemming from the legacy of the Indochina School of Fine Arts.

He was part of the generation active after Vietnam's major political changes, in a phase of gradual opening up of the national art scene. He is developing his activity at a time of stylistic diversification in contemporary Vietnamese art.

Currents

Xuan Nhi Luong is part of late Vietnamese modernism, which consists of a synthesis between Western academic principles (organization of space, color work, construction of the drawing) and plastic sensibility stemming from local traditions.

His stylized representations of figures, landscapes or genre scenes are characterized by formal simplification and a quest for compositional balance. His treatment of motif is sensitive and atmospheric, eschewing simple naturalistic description.

He thus continues the national aesthetic, following in the footsteps of modern Vietnamese painting alongside artists such as Hoang Lap Ngon, Nguyen Anh or Hoang Tich Chu.

Hoang Lap Ngon's life

Cultural context

Born in 1914, Luong Xuan Nhi developed his work in a context marked by the transition between colonial times, independence struggles and national cultural recomposition.

His production favors easel painting, particularly in oil and on silk, with a particular focus on the female figure, scenes of daily life and landscapes, recurring themes in Vietnamese modernism.

His style is characterized by a synthesis of Western academic construction, Asian decorative sense and search for chromatic harmony, which contributes to the affirmation of a modern Vietnamese pictorial language. he also plays an important pedagogical role in post-war Vietnamese artistic training.

Artistic and intellectual guidance

His training is part of the pedagogical legacy of Victor Tardieu and Joseph Inguimberty, central figures at the École des Beaux-Arts de l'Indochine. His generation includes Mai Thu, Le Pho and Nguyen Phan Chanh, who are committed to the definition of a Vietnamese artistic modernity.

His institutional and pedagogical activities place him at the heart of Vietnamese artistic networks in the second half of the 20th century, contributing to the transmission of modernist aesthetic models.

Focus on a key work

Jeune femme à l'éventail, mid-20th century

The composition centers on an isolated female figure, favoring an intimate reading. Luong Xuan Nhi's delicate treatment of the face and hands reveals a mastery of academic drawing tempered by an Asian sensibility.

His palette is soft and nuanced, and he simplifies the setting so as to enhance the model's presence without narrative overload. Spatial organization is relatively flat, inherited from the tradition of silk painting.
