Style and technique of the artist Victor Tardieu

Victor Tardieu is a twentieth-century artist to whom no current is attached. His work is heavily inspired by the Far East, producing impressionist works early in his career but experimenting with many pictorial genres. He used drawing and oil on canvas, which are more common on the auction market.

Victor Tardieu, grand peintre de l'Indochine

Victor Tardieu (1870-1937) was a French painter and draughtsman. He was born in Orléans, and entered the Paris Ecole des Beaux-Arts early, after having been a student at the Académie Julian. Léon Bonnat was his teacher for some time. His talent was soon noticed and he exhibited in various Paris salons, and collaborated with Félix Gaudin on stained glass.

He married Caroline Luingini in 1902. They had a son Jean Tardieu, who was to become a famous poet.

The same year, he exhibited a large-format painting entitled Travail at the Salon de la Société des artistes français, which won him the Salon's first national prize. This prize included a grant enabling him to travel for two years to Genoa, Liverpool and London. He would find new inspirations, but they would not exert a great influence on his career.

On his return to France, he took part in the decoration of several buildings and contributed to the realization of frescoes.

He fought in the First World War, and on his return from the front would produce a number of war paintings.

He received the Indochina prize, which enabled him to make a stay there, following which he decided to remain living there. He painted La Métropole, a large-format canvas exhibited in the University of Indochina.

In 1925, he founded the National School of Fine Arts of Indochina, now the School of Fine Arts of Vietnam with Nguyen Nam Son. He went on to direct it for eleven years.

He died in Vietnam at the age of 67.

Tardieu's imprint on his era

His career spanned several decades, and he was widely recognized for his contribution to twentieth-century art. He influenced and inspired many artists after him, and was widely disseminated in his day thanks to his status as Professor in Indochina. His work is highly appreciated for its transversal influence on French and Vietnamese art, as well as on the various currents of the 20th century.

Today, Victor Tardieu's works are highly appreciated on the auction market. His quotation is high, but his works present a strong potential result at auction  it should therefore continue to increase.
