Style and technique by artist Henri Mège
Henri Mège is a 20th-century French artist, who mainly produced drawings, oils on canvas. Not really associated with any particular movement, he mainly produced landscapes inspired by Viet-Nam and neighboring Asian countries, as did Victor Tardieu.
Henri Mège, painter of the Far East
Born in Romans in 1904, Mège initially discovered a passion for painting thanks to his mother, Isabelle Mège. By observing his mother's painting moments and exploring museums with her, he developed the foundations of his art. In 1918, while still a young schoolboy in Chambéry, he attracted attention by caricaturing his teachers. He also met the son of the painter Artigue. Like his father, he considered a military career and, as soon as he reached adulthood, decided to enlist in the chasseurs à cheval to escape his father's authority.
In 1931, his journey took him to Indochina, where he had the opportunity to meet the emperor Bao Daï and develop a friendship with the Vietnamese painter Maï-Thu. He also married the great-niece of the last viceroy of Tonkin. During this period, he managed to find time to pursue his passion for painting, under the influence of Indochinese art. However, he was captured by the Japanese in 1940, which weakened his health. After his release, he was appointed professor in Saigon from 1950 to 1956.
Then he returned to Chambéry to spend his retirement. In his spare time, he created numerous artistic works which he exhibited, notably at the Mollens gallery. His favorite subjects were Vietnamese and Savoyard landscapes.

Henri Mège is a leading member of the 20th-century Indochinese school of painting. His works are mainly landscapes.
He produced a fairly substantial number of works.
From his time to the present day, he was and remains an artist appreciated by collectors worldwide. The latter play a very important role in preserving his work, although a few canvases and drawings signed by him are exhibited in museums in France and around the world.
