The life of Léon Jallot
Léon Jallot (1874 - 1967) was a French cabinetmaker from a family of craftsmen.
Contrary to many artists of his time, he did not train at any school, but opened his own self-taught workshop in 1890, where he made one-off pieces of furniture. Nine years later, he took over the workshop of art collector and dealer Siegfried Bing. He was responsible for Bing's installation at the 1900 Universal Exhibition. At the time, his style was very close to that of cabinetmakers such as Georges de Feure and Édouard Colonna.
He and other cabinetmakers and craftsmen founded the Salon des artistes décorateurs in 1901, and in 1903 set up their own decorating studio. His success in the world of cabinetmaking was therefore almost immediate, as he competed with the most talented cabinetmakers of his day. Gradually, he introduced floral ornamentation into his furniture, notably on his guéridons, and received state commissions to furnish ministries and embassies.
He had a son, Maurice Jallot, with whom he collaborated on the realization of certain pieces of furniture from 1931 : this is why a few pieces may be signed with both names.
The success of Jallot furniture
Jallot furniture enjoyed great success during the artist's lifetime, and continues to do so today. They stand out for their exceptional craftsmanship.
Henceforth, his furniture is no longer marketed. Consequently, one of the only ways to acquire a piece of Jallot furniture is through the auction market, where works by the artist are regularly found offered for sale. They stand out from other pieces of cabinetry for their rarity and exceptional manufacturing techniques.
