Style and technique by artist Jean Dupas
Jean Dupas is a painter who belongs to the Art Deco movement. He produced drawings, a few prints, but above all oils on canvas.
The life of Jean Dupas
Jean Théodore Dupas (1882-1964) was a 20th-century French painter and artist, little known today despite the current growing interest in his work.
He was born in Bordeaux, where he studied art at the École des Beaux-Arts, then at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. In 1910, he was awarded the Prix de Rome. He was then trained by Carolus-Duran at the Villa Médicis. In 1940, he was appointed curator of the Musée Marmottan and elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts the following year.
He produced paintings, drawings and prints, but also worked as a decorator and illustrator for various buildings and fashion magazines.
With Ruhlmann, he decorated the liners Île de France and Liberté.
He died in Paris in 1964.
The legacy of Jean Dupas
Jean Dupas did not leave a considerable mark on the art history of his time, having prioritized his artistic fulfillment over success. His works are, however, highly prized on the auction market, as they are particularly characteristic of the Art Deco movement.
Private collectors play a major role in preserving his work in view of the scale of his output, even if some of his works are exhibited in museums.
Recognizing Dupas's signature
The artist doesn't always sign his works. It's best if you think you own one to have it appraised. The signature may differ depending on the type of work: print, drawing or painting. There are also copies, which is why expertise is important.
