The artist's style and technique

Finn Juhl's style is characterized by organic, flowing lines, inspired by nature and the art of three-dimensionality. In fact, the designer's aim was to create furniture in tune with the human body, offering both comfort and aesthetics. His creations are therefore often characterized by gentle curves, asymmetrical angles and refined details.

Also known for his experimentation with materials, Finn Juhl incorporated wood, metal, leather and fabric into his designs. Particularly adept at manipulating wood, the designer used complex curves to create unique, balanced forms.

The life of Finn Juhl

Finn Juhl (1912-1989) initially set out to practice as an art historian. He eventually turned to studying architecture at the Royal Academy of Copenhagen, despite his father's disapproval. Parallel to his studies, he worked with the architect Vilhelm Lauritzen on major projects. His dedication to this work led him to abandon his studies and work as a self-taught architect.

His architectural talent was soon recognized, and he won the CF Hansen prize for young architects in 1943. Two years later, he founded his own studio in Copenhagen. Juhl completed several prestigious projects, such as the Trusteeship Council Chamber at the United Nations Headquarters in New York in 1951.

Finn Juhl's artistic ascent as a designer began following his involvement in the annual exhibitions of the " Artisans Ébénistes de Copenhague ". These events brought together avant-garde architects and cabinetmakers with the aim of revolutionizing Danish design. His armchairs, highly influenced by the art of the 1940s, stood out and enjoyed great success.

These bold shapes, made in teak or dark wood often push the limits of wood's strength and require complex manufacturing techniques to realize.

Finn Juhl's imprint on his period

Like his contemporaries, Finn Juhl strives to design armchairs that follow the morphology of the human body. However, instead of creating streamlined pieces, he imagines his furniture as organic sculptures where each component integrates harmoniously.

At the Milan Triennale in the 1950s, the designer received 5 gold medals in recognition of his work. His work would go on to be presented at several exhibitions.
