Style and technique of the artist Charles Gleyre

Charles Gleyre was a 19th-century painter of rigorous academicism. He is particularly famous for his paintings inspired by the Orient. He produced engravings, drawings and oils on canvas.

 The life of Charles Gleyre

Charles Gabriel Gleyre (1806-1874) was a Swiss painter born in Chevilly.

He spent the first part of his training in Louis Hersant's studio in Paris. He painted his first canvas in Rome. He travels with a friend to Sicily, Greece, Egypt and Sudan. It was on these last trips that he acquired his oriental inspiration. He produced a number of paintings in these countries, which earned him the title of Orientalist painter.

He exhibited at the Salon of 1843 and showed himself to be an outstanding draughtsman, although he also mastered the treatment of color. That same year, he was appointed professor at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He also opened a studio on rue de Vaugirard, and trained Alfred Sisley, Claude Monet and Auguste Renoir, among others.

The latter, however, left his studio together because of a disagreement over the antique or the representation of landscape.

He died in 1874 of a ruptured aneurysm, leaving behind him a substantial legacy.

Gleyre's imprint on his era

Charles Gleyre painted history and genre scenes throughout his career, and his works are now preserved in museums and art collections around the world. He leaves behind an important legacy as an Orientalist painter but is an artist little known to the general public.

He will have influenced many artists after him, including Auguste Renoir, Claude Monet or Alfred Sisley.

Today, private collectors play a major role in preserving his work.

Recognizing the artist's signature
