Louis Van Engelen, forgotten Flemish painter
Louis Van Engelen (1856-1940) was a Belgian painter who produced genre scenes, history paintings and portraits.
He was born in Lierre and studied at the academy there, where he was a pupil of Verlat. He works between Lierre and Antwerp, and is part of the Als Ik kan group - meaning " if I want ".
In 1883, the Artistic Union of Young Antwerp Artists is founded in Antwerp - he founds a movement with the dissidents of this first group that he calls XIII, this allows them to have an organization and a structure to exhibit their works.
In his works most present on the market and most quoted, we have mostly genre scenes depicting Antwerp life, and landscape paintings with Mannerist accents.
