Style and technique by artist Josiane Cantin

Josiane Cantin is a French artist who has notably produced sculptures in terracotta, taking a contemporary approach. She also uses bronze, and places women at the center of her creations.

The artist focuses exclusively on the female body, seeking to render its curves, twists and postures intelligible through sculpture. Halfway between realism and stylization, she suggests presence rather than defining it, accentuating dynamic balances and bodily tensions.

She works from clay modeling, often from pellets, then creates versions in patinated terracotta or lost-wax bronze. Her practice combines formal rigor (model structure, anatomy) and poetic release, consequently letting the material express the momentum and fragility of the body.

Sculpture favors small formats (around 30-50 cm), where each attitude becomes a silent story. Gestures (concentration, flight, duet) form a visual vocabulary that carries emotion rather than an explicit narrative.

Surfaces vary from nuanced clay to the satin sheen of bronze, colored with patina, with effects of attenuated or living matter depending on the subject. Polished bronze captures the light and emphasizes volumes, while patinated clay offers an enveloping softness, reinforcing the confidential aspect of the work.

Josiane Cantin thus seeks to reveal a " lightness of the female body " by emphasizing its share of grace, tension and contemplation. Her practice is an empathetic exploration of the feminine, blending humility, patience and poetry.

The artist's career and the world of Josiane Cantin

Josiane Cantin hails from Saumur (Maine-et-Loire).

She is a teacher, and discovered sculpture relatively late in her career. The artist began taking evening classes at the Beaux-Arts d'Angers, after attending a Paris workshop.

Under the supervision of François d'Orglandes, she learned the main techniques of sculpture, particularly those of bronze and terracotta. Working alongside Michel Gourichon - focusing mainly on clay and terracotta work, which the artist is particularly fond of.

Today, her work is making a presence at auction, as are the sculptures of Marie-Paule Deville-Chabrolle, Isabelle Waldberg or Paule Bisman.

Focus on Concentration, Josiane Cantin, 2016

Concentration is a lost-wax bronze measuring approximately 49 cm high by 33 cm wide. The sculpture is numbered in an edition of 8, signed and stamped.

It depicts a woman in a seated pose, her hand resting against her face in a posture of concentration or meditation. The body is realistic but stylized, the proportions are slightly slender and the posture is introspective and deliberate.

The inward-looking face suggests reverie or silent reflection. The work is created using the lost-wax technique, offering finesse and precision of detail. The texture is smooth and satiny, typical of polished bronze, accentuating pure lines and uncluttered volumes.

The expressiveness comes above all from the body and gesture, not from facial details, since the artist works with plastic sobriety and an economy of means. The vertical format is compact, the figure closed in on itself, as if contained in a mental space.

The lines of the garment, stockings and legs create a stable geometric structure, reinforcing the idea of concentration. The absence of an external narrative base also focuses attention on the interiority of the gesture.

This work therefore embodies a subtle emotion (calm, reflection, perhaps a moment of doubt or melancholy). The introspective stance invites the viewer to share. The work is rooted in a sensitive and respectful vision of the feminine inner process, without pathos or excess.

This work is a landmark in Cantin's maturity, combining formal rigor and emotional poetry. It testifies to the artist's ability to create moments centered on the human rather than the narrative.

Between figuration and plastic stylization, Concentration consequently illustrates his quest for a universal sculpture.
