Vanessa Beecroft was born on April 25, 1969, in Genoa, Italy, to an Italian mother and a British father. She studied at the Liceo Artistico in Genoa, then at the Accademia Ligustica di Belle Arti, where she earned a degree in painting, before enrolling at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan, where she earned a degree in set design in 1993.  

Her first solo exhibition took place in 1994 at the Fac-Simile Gallery in Milan. Since 1998, her performances have been featured at leading international institutions: the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Kunsthalle in Vienna, and the Venice Biennale in 2007. She currently lives and works in Los Angeles.

Vanessa Beecroft is the creator of a unique genre, “living painting”: conceptual performances bringing together a large number of models, often nude or semi-nude, arranged according to a precise choreography within a museum or architectural space, and documented through photography and video.

Her work explores the status of the female body, the boundary between spectacle and intimacy, and the language of fashion, from which she borrows codes while subverting them.

Her most politically significant work remains VB61, “Still Death! Darfur Still Deaf?”, presented at the 2007 Venice Biennale, in which Sudanese women portray lifeless bodies in response to the Darfur genocide, echoing Jackson Pollock’s drippings and Hermann Nitsch’s Viennese Actionism.
