Jean-Jacques Henner found his style and drew inspiration from several artistic currents such as Academism and, more particularly, Symbolism, with its attraction to dreams, a certain mysticism and a form of melancholy, in reaction to naturalism. He was influenced by Italian and Flemish painters, reworking the sfumato technique among others. He painted women with a symbolic, even mythological, character, in a vaporous style, and being partisans of the " non finito ", the background against which the bust figures appear is relatively abstract or sketched.

The life of Jean-Jacques Henner

Jean Jacques Henner (1829 - 1905) was a 19th-century French painter.

Born in the Haut-Rhin region of France, he began painting at an early age, starting with landscape representations, influenced by realism. He went on to study at the Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he studied under Drolling and Picot. He copied the great Italian painters of the Renaissance, as well as Ingres and Corot. He was awarded the Prix de Rome in 1858, which enabled him to stay at the Villa Medici for five years. He studied Caravaggio, Titian and the Renaissance painters, traveling to all the major Italian cities. He returned to Paris in 1864 and exhibited numerous works at the Salon, his canvases being much appreciated by the public of the time.

He produced works until his death in 1905, and exhibited just as much.

Jean-Jacques Henner left his mark on 19th-century art history by winning the Prix de Rome and his extensive study of Italian painting, which was to exert a great influence on his painting, and greatly contributed to the growth of his fame at the dawn of the 20th century.
