The artist's style and technique

At the beginning of the 20th century, Georges de Feure was considered one of the masters of Art Nouveau. His talent was evident in many areas of the graphic arts, as well as in architecture and furniture. He also put his brush at the service of landscape painting, and was unmistakably distinct from Impressionism, belonging to the movements of Symbolism and Art Nouveau. Initially sketched, the landscapes are covered with flat areas of paint, without the brushstrokes disappearing. While the sky saturates two-thirds of the picture, the buildings and trees appear limpid against a shimmering background. On the other hand, the figure of the femme fatale occupies a prominent place in his repertoire, a recurring subject in Art Nouveau.

The life of Georges de Feure

Born in Paris in 1868 to Dutch and Belgian parents, Georges Joseph Van Sluÿters was forced to flee France in 1870 with his parents to the Netherlands to escape the Franco-Prussian war. After showing a keen interest in painting, he entered the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam in 1886, but soon tired of it and moved to Paris, where he was joined by his entire family in 1889. In the capital, Feure gained access to the Parisian art scene, frequenting the cafés where the artists of his day mingled, particularly in Montmartre. Georges Faure made his mark on the Parisian art scene and intelligentsia in the early 1890s. In great demand, he received commissions for Symbolist watercolors, newspaper caricatures and posters. At the same time, he was relatively influenced by Jules Chéret, the famous poster artist, and produced numerous posters, lithographs and even illustrated books. He achieved great success in interior decoration, to which he devoted himself in the 1920s, and was even commissioned to fit out and decorate the mansion of the great couturier Madeleine Vionnet.

Feure was passionate about everything to do with interior design, and created wallpapers, porcelain and glassware. At the 1900 Universal Exhibition, he decorated the two interiors of the Art Nouveau pavilion. Praised by critics who found in his art the highest French refinement, he continued his work in the early 20th century, creating theater sets and costumes.

Despite this success, Feure's financial situation deteriorated, and he fell into disuse in the 1930s. He died in 1943 in Paris under the Occupation, and despite his temporary oblivion by collectors, today he once again finds many admirers.

With regard to portraits of femmes fatales, a double polarity is established between the masculine and the feminine. The women seem proud and triumphant, while the men, overwhelmed by a fatal destiny, mourn the tragic end of their thwarted love affairs. De Feure emphasizes the pernicious charm he detects in women, who bewitch their targets in the manner of the siren songs of the Odyssey. Emphasizing the power relations at play between the sexes, Faure adorns the women in rich costumes and the men in wretched rags.

The artist's pieces are marked with the signature "G. de Feure" or "De Feure" in elegantly lettered cursive script. The dinner services, however, do not feature stamps, which makes appraisal more delicate.
