The artist's style and technique
At the beginning of the 20th century, Archibald Knox was considered one of the masters of Art Nouveau. His talent is illustrated in many fields of graphic art, but above all in furnishings. He was very close to the Art & Crafts movement, developed in architecture at the end of the 19th century, which had a certain stylistic proximity to Art Nouveau.
The life of Archibald Knox
Born on the Isle of Man (in the center of the British Isles) in 1864 to Scottish parents, he studied at the Douglas School of Art and worked for the architect Baillie Scott. He then moved to London and became a designer for the Silver Studio. He then collaborated with Christopher Dresser, a very fashionable Victorian architect.
He then collaborated with the firm Liberty & Co, for whom he created various furniture objects : candlesticks, combs, lighting fixtures, dishes, jewelry ...
Parallel to his career as an artist, he is also curator of the social history department at Manx National Heritage.
He drew much of his inspiration for his drawings and other creations from his native island.
Archibald Knox died in 1933, aged 68, on the Isle of Man.
