The life of Jean Gaston Mantel
Jean Gaston Mantel (1914 - 1995), was a 20th-century French Orientalist painter.
He studied at the Beaux-Arts in Paris and won the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts prize, thanks to which he moved to Morocco to find new inspiration. Settling in Rabat, he depicted scenes from the daily life of the local population, notably in Meknes, and returned to France to exhibit his work and apply for a teaching position in Morocco, which he obtained. Forced by the Second World War to return to France, he moved back to Rabat as soon as he could.
He produced posters and decorative panels displayed in major Parisian hotels with the aim of promoting Moroccan tourism.
At the end of his life, he settled on the Côte d'Azur, which enabled him to return to landscapes substantially similar to those in Rabat in order to continue his painting activity.
He died in Marseille at the age of 80.
