The life of Pinchus Kremegne
Pinchus Kremegne was a Russian artist of the Paris School, born near Lida (Russia) in 1890. His father was relatively well-to-do and ran a workshop for Slavic art objects. They emigrated for a time with the Kremegne brothers to the United States after taking part in anti-tsarist meetings in Russia at the time. He began his artistic training at the Beaux-Arts in Vilnius, like Chaïm Soutine and Michel Kikoine.
The three artists moved to Paris and at the same time settled in La Ruche, where they lived, painted and exhibited.
He worked with Modigliani and Derain, and from 1914 exhibited at the Salon des artistes indépendants, along with many other artists that critics would call the Paris School. He soon abandoned his initial discipline, sculpture, to devote himself to painting. After the war, he produced a series of red nudes that are quite emblematic of his work. He signs a contract with gallery owner Paul Guillaume, which enables him to leave La Ruche.
He then travels all over France and Sweden with his children and wife, in order to find other sources of inspiration, but also to Israel.
He separated from his wife at the end of his career, and died at his home in Céret in 1981.
