The artist's style and technique
Marquet, famous for his paintings, chose water as his main subject, demonstrating his undeniable passion for this theme. His artistic mastery extended to all manifestations of water, from the banks of the Seine to the shores of the Mediterranean, from urban landscapes to wilderness. For the artist, water embodies poetry and serenity, a mineral element imbued with meditation, far removed from human tumult.
Although part of the Fauvist movement, Marquet stands out for his subtle use of light and delicate hues. He succeeds in capturing the atmosphere of places and rendering it with finesse on canvas.
The life of Albert Marquet
Albert Marquet was born in Bordeaux in 1875. From an early age, he showed little interest in the traditional educational system, preferring to devote his time to painting and drawing. Encouraged by his mother, he entered the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris in 1890, where he made friends with Henri Matisse. After graduating, he continued his training at the École des Beaux-Arts, in the studio of the famous symbolist Gustave Moreau.
In 1905, Marquet exhibited for the first time at the Salon d'Automne alongside other former students of Gustave Moreau's studio. The style of this newly-formed group is characterized by the use of simplified forms and vivid flat colors. Two years later, the artist presented his first monographic exhibition.
Throughout his career, Marquet traveled extensively, drawing on his artistic inspiration. His sojourns in the Maghreb, where he spent every winter for over 25 years, left a deep impression on him. Fascinated by the light of Algeria and renowned for his expertise in depicting aquatic reflections, he produced numerous compositions, notably on the port of Algiers, where similarities with the works of Hokusai and Hiroshige can be detected.
After the First World War, Marquet settled permanently in Algiers, where he remained until 1945 before returning to France. He then withdrew from the artistic scene until his death in 1947.
Albert Marquet's imprint on his period
Considered the "painter of river views", Albert Marquet (1875-1947) drew inspiration from Impressionism to develop his own style. He left his mark with his artistic singularity, and today is an artist much appreciated by collectors.
