The life of Martial Raysse
Martial Raysse (b. 1936) is a French artist. Born on the Côte d'Azur, he painted and studied literature after high school. He really began his career as an artist in 1945, creating assemblages in Plexiglas, which he exhibited for the first time alongside Jean Cocteau.
After questioning his career, he traveled to the United States, where he found his artistic identity as a new realist.
In collaboration with Nikki de Saint Phalle, he created the sets for a ballet by Roland Petit. In 1966, he is awarded the David Bright prize at the Venice Biennale.
After the events of May 68, Raysse reflects on the status of the work of art and in particular on its commercial side. His work changes aesthetically and theoretically, in an approach comparable to that of Jean Hélion.
He then produces drawings from life and responds to various public commissions.
Martial Raysse's imprint on his period
Martial Raysse makes a lasting mark on his era, notably for having produced numerous expressionist and abstract lithographs. Some of his works are exhibited in museums, but private collectors play the greatest role in their preservation. Before Pierre Soulages, he held the record for the most expensive work sold by a living French artist.
