The life of Fernandez Arman

Fernandez Arman, or Armand Fernandez is a Franco-American artist, who employs manufactured objects as a pictorial and sculptural technique.

He was born in Nice, into a family of antique dealers. He began his artistic training at the Nice School of Decorative Arts in 1928, and met Yves Klein and Claude Pascal at the gym they all frequented. He produces works at a very young age and signs his first name in a hidden tribute to Van Gogh. During an exhibition at Iris Clert, he makes his artist's signature " Arman " official by deleting the " d " from his first name. In this gallery, he organizes an exhibition entitled " Le Plein " echoing Yves Klein's " Le Vide ", presented two years earlier. With Klein, he founds the Nouveaux Réalistes group, later joined by César. He lived between New York and Nice from the 1960s, always interested in the materiality of objects and the theme of overconsumption.

His Accumulations are his best-known works, characterized by a heap of diverse objects. HisColères series, in which he destroys objects, is also particularly famous.

He died in New York in 2005, aged 76.
