The life of Pierre Narcisse Guérin
Pierre Narcisse Guérin (1774-1833) was a 19th-century French painter and artist, well known in his own time and a master of many painters.
He was born in Paris into a family foreign to art, and was accepted into the Académie Royale de peinture et de sculpture. He was excluded because his teachers found him lazy, but was quickly reinstated. In 1797, aged just 23, he was awarded the first Grand Prix de Rome. He came to prominence with The Return of Marcus Sextus.
He traveled and resided for several years in Italy, where he drew inspiration from Italian Renaissance painters.
Returning to France, he took part in Napoleonic artistic propaganda by painting Bonaparte pardoning the Cairo rebels. He then opened his own studio in Paris, and trained the new generation of painters, which included Théodore Géricault and Eugène Delacroix, among others.
He was then appointed Professor at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he taught until the end of his life. In 1822, he became Director of the Académie de France in Rome.
