The life of Raymond Subes

Raymond Subes (1891-1970), a French artist, became a key figure in the world of 20th-century art and architecture. Born in Paris, he studied first at the École supérieure des arts décoratifs and then at the École Boulle, specializing in chasing. There, he acquired more technique, but already possessed considerable talent. He worked for Émile Robert for the rest of his career, although this was marked by the two world wars. In the first, he was wounded in action in 1914. He ended his military career as a sergeant-major in the French army. In 1958, he was elected a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts. He was awarded various decorations, including Commandeur de la Légion d'Honneur et des Beaux-Arts, as well as the Croix de Guerre. Despite the two wars, he continued his career until the end of his life, producing a wide variety of works. He worked for the shipyards, creating balustrades and stair railings for the liners Le Normandie and l'Atlantique. He also designed furniture, always in the Art Deco style.  He lived most of his life on rue Las Cases, in the VII arrondissement, very close to our offices.
