André Thuret, chemist turned artist
André Thuret (1898-1965), was born, raised and educated in Paris. He graduated in chemistry and law. From 1922, he held a succession of engineering positions at the Bagneux and Bezons glassworks. This gave him the opportunity to acquire glassmaking techniques. In 1925, he took part in the Decorative Arts exhibition and was awarded an honorary diploma.
The following year, he was appointed head of the Chemistry Chair at the Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers. This enabled him to pass on his passion and talent. He also works for the Paris Court of Appeal, where he carries out expert appraisals.
Thanks to his training as a chemist, he can perfect his technical mastery of glass and achieve breathtaking results. He blows his glass at over 1000 degrees C.
The success of André Thuret's glass pieces
André Thuret produces exceptional pieces, whose shapes and patterns will evolve over the course of his career. He creates his own molds to give his glass pieces unique shapes. Thanks to his knowledge of chemistry, he colors some of his creations.
He exhibits at the Salon d'Automne and overseas at Altantique. At the end of his career, he returned to pieces with smooth walls, which are therefore less sophisticated but just as elegant.
