Vasudeo Gaitonde's career

Vasudeo Gaitonde (1924-2001), was an Indian abstract artist of the 20th century.

He was born in Nagpur and graduated from the Sir J. J. School of Art in Mumbai. He then joined the Bombay Progressive Artist's group, founded by Francis Newton Souza and Maqbool Fida Husain, among others.

He considers his work to be " non-objective ", and never considered himself an abstract painter, rejecting this qualification even emanating from critics. He used hieroglyphics to explain the silence in his canvases.

He exhibited all over the world, working mainly in Dehli, and received numerous awards for his body of work.

Vasudeo Gaitonde died in Dehli in 2001, aged 76.
