The career of Émile Deckers
Émile Deckers was an Orientalist painter born in Belgium in 1885.
He studied at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Liège, then in Paris at Carolus Duran's studio.
Through his work, which respects academic standards and the representation of the body in painting, he wins numerous prizes, including the grand prize for anatomy, the first prize for painting, as well as the first prize for historical composition.
During World War I, he fights at the front, which greatly slows down his production.
In 1921, Deckers settles in Algiers, and paints orientalist scenes. He is particularly famous for his portraits of Algerians depicting three protagonists, women or men, dressed in local garb.
He continued to exhibit in Belgium, but also in Algeria and the Belgian Congo, where he settled from the 1950s.
