Marcel Coard, value and rating of his creations
His story, his career
Marcel Coard is a major decorator of the 1930s.
He is famous for his work on the layout of couturier Jacques Doucet's Studio and for decorating the château of Paul Cocteau (brother of jean Cocteau), near Tours. Born into a wealthy family, he studied at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris before opening his own decorating boutique. He creates unique pieces in rare and precious materials, inspired by African and Oceanic art and Cubism. He collaborates with renowned cabinetmakers such as Chanaux, Pelletier and Roumy to create complex works.
Marcel Coard adapts his creations to his customers' desires, mixing styles in projects. His style evolves over the years, integrating wrought iron, marble and a "humanist" dimension into his works. The richness of his creations and his ability to adapt made him a much sought-after artist in the 1930s, with furniture stamped with his name and a parrot profile, his trademark.
