Paul Sérusier was a painter who belonged to the Nabis group. Some of his paintings are part of the Post-Impressionist movement. However, we must beware of this general qualification, which encompasses several very different intellectual approaches in twentieth-century painting. He produced drawings, prints, oils on canvas, cardboard and Bristol board.

The life of Paul Sérusier     

Paul Sérusier (1864-1927) was a French painter. He was born in Paris into a relatively well-off family. Like many artists of his time, he was enrolled in the Condorcet secondary school. Unlike many others, he graduated with a degree in philosophy and mathematics, and completed his secondary education. He began his pictorial training at the Académie Julian, where he rubbed shoulders with postimpressionist artists. It was there that he befriended Maurice Denis. He also met Émile Bernard and Paul Gauguin. It was thanks to the latter that he dared to use colors with pure pigments, and began to work on inspiration instead of remaining in an imitative approach. His Talisman helped form the Nabis group. The group was initially formed through intellectual meetings, where occultism and symbolism were discussed. Although most of their work dates back to the late 19th century, the Nabis drew heavily on this movement. This is why some of Séruisier's friends will be referred to as symbolists, such as Félix Vallotton. He would work with new artists: Édouard Vuillard and Ker-Xavier Roussel, for example, joined the group a few years after him.

He traveled Europe in search of inspiration and exhibited widely. At the end of his career, he studied Egyptian and medieval art, which led him to more religious subjects and the production of decorative elements.

He died of a violent heart attack at the age of 62, in total anonymity. No one knew of his work at the time.

Paul Sérusier made a significant contribution to the development of modern art in France, and his work had a lasting influence on many artists of the time and beyond. His theories on aesthetics and colorimetry contributed to the history of twentieth-century art. However, he left his mark on his era posthumously, having failed to achieve success during his lifetime.
