Style and technique of Pavel Chmaroff
Pavel Chmaroff is a member of the École de Paris group, along with other artists (Michel Kikoine, Alessio Isupoff, Nicolas de Staël) who immigrated to Paris from Russia. His work draws on a variety of influences, including the Italian Mannerists and the French Renaissance, with the Fontainebleau painters having women in the bath as their favorite subject. He produces drawings and oils on canvas.
The life of Pavel Chmaroff
Pavel Dimitrivitch Chmarov (1874 - 1950) was a Russian artist of the École de Paris.
He was born in Voronezh and studied at the district school, then at the Voronezh drawing school. He then attended Répine's studio at the Saint Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts. In 1899, he received a scholarship and traveled throughout Italy, Austria, Germany and France.
He portrayed various Russian aristocrats, right up to Tsar Nicholas II. During his lifetime, he won the gold medal at the World's Fair in Saint Louis, USA, as well as the same award at the World's Fair in Liège the following year.
Recognized and acknowledged, Chmaroff would later exhibit at the Union of Russian Artists and hold his first solo show at the Charpentier gallery, followed by other galleries in Brussels and Paris.
Two retrospectives were devoted to him after his death in 1950.
