Style and technique of artist Paul Désiré Trouillebert

Trouillebert is part of the Orientalist movement. He most often depicts nature. The majority of his work remained genre painting, but he also mastered the representation of the body : he also painted nudes.

Paul Trouillebert and Barbizon

Paul Désiré Trouillebert (1829-1900), a French artist, has become a little-known but rare and sought-after figure in the art world. He was born in Paris, but traveled throughout France and Europe to find other sources of inspiration.

As part of the Orientalist movement, he mainly depicted various landscapes with an oriental inspiration. These can be flowers, mountains or the sea. He drew much of his inspiration from the painter Corot, who was one of his models.

Like many artists, he trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and was part of the Barbizon group. His work was still little recognized at the time, with history painting still predominating. Ernest Hébert was one of his masters. He remained little known during his career, but his works were nevertheless in demand on the art market.

The value of his works

In the eyes of art experts and collectors, Paul Trouillebert is remarkable for his artistic simplicity. He draws most of his inspiration from the landscapes around him and from reality in general. The majority of his works are held in private collections, which is why they are present on the auction market.

Recognizing Paul Trouillebert's signature

Paul Trouillebert's paintings are normally signed and dated at the bottom right or left of the painting. However, as his work is not very well mastered, it is important to consult an expert.
