Alfred Roll, forgotten realist

Alfred Philippe Roll (1846-1819) was a French painter who left a lasting mark on his era.

He was born in Paris and studied at the Beaux-Arts de Paris, where he took classes with Léon Bonnat. He began by painting landscapes, but his career was interrupted by the Franco-Prussian War, when he served in the Army. Inspired by the Bolognese school, his first compositions were romantic - but he soon moved towards realism, following in the footsteps of Gustave Courbet. He exhibited almost all his paintings at the Paris Salon.

The French government promoted him to official painter of the Third Republic, immortalizing on canvas the centenary of the Estates General and the portrait of President Félix Faure. He produced in his studio on rue Alphonse de Neuville, which became rue Alfred Roll.

In 1905, he became President of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts.

Today, his works are appreciated by collectors who play a big role in preserving his work, even if some paintings are exhibited in museums.

Recognizing the artist's signature

Alfred Roll sometimes signs his works, mostly at the bottom of the painting, in a color that contrasts with the background. However, there are many copies, which is why expertise is paramount.
