Style and technique of the artist Paul Huet
Paul Huet was part of the Romantic movement, breaking with the academic canons of the time. He produced mainly drawings and oils on canvas, but also made prints.
Paul Huet, forgotten romantic
Paul Huet (1803-1869) was a French painter who left a lasting mark on his era.
He was born in Paris into a family of drapers. They were ruined after the revolutionary events. His mother died when he was just seven, and he was placed in a boarding school at Choisy-le-Roi, continuing his education at Henri IV. From an early age, he was fascinated by a Rembrandt etching. He studies with Pierre-Narcisse Guérin and baron Gros. His apprenticeship did not last very long, as he refused the academic rules.
After Rembrandt, he was to become fascinated by Géricault and his Chasseur à cheval. It is this painting that will inspire him for his series of riders, the first major work of his career. He met Eugène Delacroix at the Salon, and were lifelong friends.
In 1823, his father, who subsidized his studies, died. He consequently faced great financial difficulties. He will paint still lifes to get by.
On a trip to Normandy, he meets Richard Parkes Bonington, who teaches him Constable techniques. Following this meeting, he is criticized for being an imitator of English painting. He is seriously ill, but exhibits anyway at the Salon of 1827. Victor Hugo praised the exhibition. In the 1830s, he married his niece and became the official drawing teacher of the Duchesse d'Orléans, although Ingres' defenders criticized him for neglecting this stage of painting.
His career would run out of steam due to the government of the Second Empire, which did not appreciate his work. Théodore Rousseau criticized him negatively, yet he continued to paint.
He died in rue Madame of a pulmonary embolism in 1869.
Paul Huet's imprint on his era
Paul Huet marked his era with his talent and non-conformism. Throughout his life, he sought to transgress the conventions of painting and society.
Today, his works are appreciated by collectors who play a major role in preserving his work, even if some paintings are exhibited in museums.
Recognizing the artist's signature
Paul Huet sometimes signs his works, mostly at the bottom of the painting, in a color that contrasts with the background. However, there are many copies, which is why expertise is paramount.
