Style and technique of the artist Odilon Redon
Odilon Redon is one of the representatives of the Symbolist movement, exploring the depths of the human soul, dreams and nightmares, and attempting to represent them by painting or engraving. He mainly uses oil on canvas in his work ; and has produced a few drawings and prints.
Odilon Redon, symbolist around black
Odilon Redon (1840 - 1916) was born in Bordeaux. His health was poor from an early age, and he was raised by a wet nurse and then by his uncle in the countryside. He began drawing as a child, inspired by the vineyard landscapes where he grew up. His parents took him on several pilgrimages in the hope that a miracle would happen and he would recover. He took early drawing lessons from a pupil of Eugène Isabey, his family encouraging him in his vocation. On his father's advice, he pursued architectural studies, but he didn't really enjoy them. He prepared for the Beaux-Arts competition for architecture, but failed, and resented it. He persevered, however, and studied painting in Jean-Léon Gérôme's studio. He often returned to Bordeaux, where he met Rodolphe Bresdin, with whom he made prints. In his early works, he used a lot of black. He moved to Barbizon, then to the Netherlands, where the old paintings of the United Provinces influenced his work. There, he discovered the paintings of the Amsterdam school with Rembrandt, and the Caravaggesques of Utrecht, who would influence his use of black.
After the birth of his first son, he says he had a trigger and began to use more color in his canvases. He experiments with pastels and rubs shoulders with the Nabis group. He collaborated with Maurice Denis to produce commissions.
Odilon Redon's imprint on his period
Odilon Redon was influenced in his work by his spirituality, but also by music and science. Long before Kandinsky, he succeeded in transcribing the vibrations and waves of sounds onto his canvases, as well as their tonality through color and pictorial technique.
Today, collectors play a big role in preserving his work, as most of his output is not in museums.
Recognizing the artist's signature
Not all of Redon's works are signed. They may be at the bottom of the painting, but if you think you own one, it's best to have it appraised to be sure of the originality of your property.
