Style and technique by artist Henri Motte
Henri Motte is part of the neo-classicism movement, which follows the return to Antique during the reign of Louis XVI. He thus adopted the canons of classicism, like Jacques-Louis David and Baron Gérard, the main exponent of this movement. His compositions are very Raphaelian, sometimes also borrowing a few pastel colors from Mannerism. He produced mostly history paintings, drawing inspiration from subjects of his time but also from ancient subjects.

Henri Motte (1846-1922) was a French painter and illustrator, best known for his works related to history, mythology and book illustration. He produced a large number of historical paintings, battle scenes and illustrations for literary and historical works.
Motte was particularly renowned for his ability to capture historical detail accurately in his paintings. He worked on projects such as the decoration of the Salle des Croisades at the Château de Versailles, as well as illustrations for editions of classic books and literary works.
His paintings are often characterized by their realism and attention to detail. He was also influenced by the academic movement of his time, which is reflected in his artistic style.
Henri Motte's imprint on his time
Henri Motte is best known for capturing key moments in French history. However, he also restored visibility to often little-represented antique scenes, and participated as an architect in the decoration of several buildings such as the Château de Versailles or the Pantheon.
