Heade is part of the Hudson River School movement, which brought together American landscape painters with a romantic inspiration. Later, he would be classified in American Luminism, a current derived from the former that emphasizes the work of light. He depicted nature extensively in his oil paintings, which are the most valuable works of his on the auction market.

The life of Martin Johnson Heade

Martin Johnson Heade (1819-1904) was an American painter relatively unknown to the general public in France. He was born in Lumberville, Pennsylvania, where he studied with Edward Hicks, an American primitive painter. He traveled to Europe in search of new inspiration and produced a few naval paintings. He continues to produce them while in America, exhibiting in Philadelphia and then New York. It was during this period that he joined the Hudson River School.

Later in his career, he discovered a strong interest in South America. In particular, the landscapes of the Amazon were to inspire him greatly, and he would paint the plants found there as well as exotic animals, focusing his work on the representation of light.

At the end of his career, he married and moved to Florida, where he mainly painted still lifes of flowers.
