The life of Eugène Louis Gillot
Eugène Louis Gillot (1867-1925) was a French painter born in Paris.
He produced painters and watercolors, but began as a wood engraver. Baron Dart adopted him, and he lived with him in his château. When Baron Dart died, Baroness Dart found him a studio in Paris and put him up.
Little is known about his life, but we do know that he traveled and resided at the English court. He became friends with the royal couple and painted the shores of England, inspired by Turner.
He served in the Navy during the First World War, then left on an official Army mission in 1918. When he returned to France, he founded the Salon des peintres de Marine and the Société nationale des Beaux-arts de la mer.
Gillot's imprint on his era
Gillot painted military and naval scenes throughout his career, and his works are today held in a number of museums and art collections around the world. He leaves behind an important legacy as a marine painter, but is an artist little known to the general public.
