A pupil of Guillaume Cabasson, author of a significant pictorial output, the name of César Pattein is little known. Yet the artist is quoted on the art market and attracts many collectors. In fact, Pattein's paintings are commonplace and popular in auction rooms. His oils on canvas are his most highly-rated works and can fetch tens of thousands of euros at auction, such as his oil on canvas Flower fight, Brittany, dating from 1903, sold for €77,770 while it was estimated at between €22,400 and €33,580.

Artist's style and technique

César Pattein produced mainly landscape paintings, as well as a few portraits, using the same pictorial processes that still belong to the Académie. He was part of the naturalist movement and produced mainly oils on canvas, in fairly dark shades.

César Pattein, his life, his work

César Auguste Pattein (1850-1931) was a French painter born in the Hauts-de-France region.

As his elder brothers had chosen artistic careers, Pattein too began by learning engraving from Guillaume Cabasson. He then turned to painting, which he learned in Alphonse Colas's studio at the Lille academy. There he met the painter Jules Breton, with whom he exhibited regularly at the Salon from 1882. There, he won medals for his depictions of Flanders landscapes.

The First World War forced him to move his studio, and he returned to his home town only after the armistice.

The legacy of César Pattein  

César Pattein is not a well-known artist to the general public today; his peers are more widely recognized. However, his works are highly rated at auction, and have some upside potential. Although some of his works are exhibited by museums, private collectors play the greatest role in the preservation of his work.
