The life of Jules Laurens

Jules Joseph Auguste Laurens (1825 - 1901, was a 19th-century French painter.

He was born in the Vaucluse region and joined his brother, also a painter established in Montpellier in 1837. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in the same city, learning painting and drawing techniques in Alexandre Cabanel's studio. A few years later, he continued his training at the Beaux-Arts de Paris, where he studied in the studio of painter Paul Delaroche. He failed to win the Prix de Rome in 1845, and set off the following year on a trip to Eastern Europe and the Middle East. Originally leaving to assist a scientific mission, he was to make the representation of the East the heart of his painting, and would be referred to as an Orientalist painter.

He produced portraits of peasants and workers, but also landscape paintings, also following in the artistic vein of Corot and the Barbizon school.

He died in 1901, at the age of 75.
