Style and technique of artist Gustave Jacquet
Gustave Jacquet is part of academic figuratism, influenced by William Adolphe Bouguereau. He excelled especially in genre scenes and female portraits. He produced drawings, prints and oils on canvas.
Gustave Jacquet, forgotten portraitist
Gustave Jean Jaqcuet (1846-1909) was a French painter who produced genre scenes and female portraits.
He was born in Paris and studied at the Beaux-Arts de Paris, where he attended classes with William Adolphe Bouguereau. He devoted himself mainly to genre scenes, depicting scenes of daily life that were a priori of no historical interest but nonetheless presented a certain pictorial interest. With his great sensitivity, he was particularly interested in the representation of women - and depicted them in simple compositions, without extravagant jewels or clothes. There are some Mannerist influences in his choice of colors, as well as in the treatment of strokes (which are sometimes deliberately blurred to bring lightness to the final rendering, as well as transparency for fabrics).
He presents his works at various Parisian salons and acquires a small notoriety.
He dies in Paris at the age of 63.
Gustave Jacquet's imprint on his era
Gustave Jacquet didn't make much of a mark on his era, but his output remains interesting today and prized by some collectors.
Today, his works are appreciated by collectors who play a big role in preserving his work, even if some paintings are exhibited in museums.
Recognizing the artist's signature
Gustave Jacquet sometimes signs his works, mostly at the bottom of the painting, in a color that contrasts with the background.
