Hasagewa's imprint on 19th-century art
The artist imported new techniques to France and Europe, including that of black etching, and popularized woodcutting, which was not widely used. He was one of the best-known and most appreciated Japanese artists in France at the time. Today, his works still appeal to bidders and the public alike.
Recognizing the artist's signature
Not all of Hasagewa's works are signed, especially when it comes to drawings and prints. He may sometimes have signed his drawing or print on the frame, which may have disappeared or been changed over the years. This is why an estimate is important.
