Rating and value of the artist Georges Hyon

Considered a war scene painter in his own right in his day, Georges Hyon leaves behind an artistic identity of his own. This legacy consists mainly of paintings. Today, prices for his works are rising under the auctioneer's hammer, and his stock is stable. His canvases and other works are particularly prized, especially by French buyers, and the price at which they sell on the art market ranges from €120 to €19,000, a considerable delta but one that speaks volumes about the value that can be attributed to Hyon's works. In 2017, an oil on canvas entitled Grenadiers à pied de la garde faisant le coup de feu en protection de l'Empereur Napoléon Ier, durant la Retraite de Russie sold for €19,000, while it was estimated at between €4,000 and €6,000.

Georges Hyon, forgotten war painter

Georges Hyon (1855-1913 ?) was a French painter who produced battle and war scenes, sometimes years after the historical events in question.

He was born in Paris - no details are known about his childhood and artistic training. It was at the end of the Second Empire, in the 1870s, that Hyon was to begin his artistic production, taking part in several exhibitions, including those held at the Salon de peinture et de sculpture but also in the United States, where an exhibition relating to the imperial couple formed by Napoleon III and Eugenie was held in Nassau County.

He depicted military scenes in most of his compositions, drawing his inspiration mainly from the two Empires and the wars fought during those periods.

Georges Hyon's imprint on his era

Georges Hyon didn't make much of a mark on his time, but his output remains interesting today and prized by some collectors.

Today, his works are appreciated by collectors who play a big role in preserving his work, even if some paintings are exhibited in museums.

Recognizing the artist's signature

Georges Hyon sometimes signs his works, mostly at the bottom of the painting, in a color that contrasts with the background.
