Alexandre Marie Guillemin, his life, his work

Alexandre Marie Guillemin was a 19th-century painter born in 1817.

During his formative years, he frequented the studio of Baron Gros, who trained him in the technical aspects of drawing and color. Guillemin went on to paint all over France, particularly in Brittany, where he depicted peasants. He was thus one of the " intimate painters " who abandoned historical painting to devote themselves to depictions of everyday life and nature : this was the beginning of the Romantic sensibility in painting.

Emotions were thus very much in evidence, and compositions were ultimately rather sober.

Guillemin mainly used the technique of oil on canvas ; he exhibited his work at the Salon alongside several artists of his era, particularly Romantic painters.

He died in 1880.

The artist's works and style

Guillemin's style lies somewhere between naturalism and romanticism, his canvases imbued with great simplicity but also great sensitivity.

He mainly painted oils on canvas, the category most sold at auction.
