Style and technique of artist Jules Hervé
Most of Jules Hervé's work focuses on color nuances as well as genre scenes. He mainly used Paris as a model, painting everyday scenes. He also depicted religious processions. Some see him as an Impressionist.
The life of Jules Hervé
Jules René Hervé (1887 - 1981), a French artist, became a fairly important figure in the 20th-century art world.
He was born in Langres, in the Haute-Marne region. His uncle was a drawing teacher. He chose to move to Paris in 1908, to study at the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs.
He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1910 and began teaching the following year. He received several medals (including a gold one at the 1925 Salon).
During the Great War, he was mobilized. He resumed his career from 1925, traveling around Europe to meet other artists, discover new works and find inspiration.
He exhibited in Belfort and Langres with several artists including Jules Adler, with whom he had artistic similarities. He won a gold medal at the 1937 Universal Exhibition, then was elected vice-president of the Salon des artistes français.
Faced with the novelty of works in the Salons and on the art market at the time, and with no desire to innovate artistically, he simply chose to retire from artistic life, returning to Langres where he would end his days.
The legacy of Jules Hervé
Jules Hervé, among all the painters of the 20th century, stands out for his naturalism and simple realism. Some would call him an Impressionist, even if that's not quite the spirit in which he evolved. His works are still sought-after and appreciated at auction.
Recognizing Jules Hervé's signature
Jules Hervé signs his works in most cases, on the canvas at the bottom of the painting in a color that contrasts with the background. Occasionally, his works are unsigned.
