Henri Manguin is a twentieth-century painter who worked with a variety of media. He was one of the main representatives of the Fauvist movement at the beginning of his century. His output is substantial and comprises mainly oils on canvas.
Henri Manguin, from Fauvism to Saint Tropez
Henri Charles Manguin (1874 - 1949), was a French painter born in Paris.
He attended secondary school at the Lycée Condorcet but soon abandoned his studies to devote himself to painting. He studied in Gustave Moreau's studio at the Beaux-Arts de Paris, and met Henri Matisse, Albert Marquet, and many others who would become part of the cage aux fauves with him.
He married Jeanne Carette at the age of 25, and exhibited in the same years at Galerie B. Weil gallery and at the Société nationale des Beaux-Arts. In 1902, he exhibited for the first time at the Salon des Indépendants.
Two years later, he befriended Paul Signac. They moved to Saint Tropez, where Manguin found a new source of inspiration. Like all promising artists of his time, he exhibits at the Salon d'Automne and becomes a member. Ambroise Vollard bought 150 paintings from him in 1904, launching his career. He traveled to Europe and Russia, then settled in Neuilly.
A friend of painter Félix Vallotton, he took advantage of his home in Honfleur to find new inspiration. When the Great War began, he moved to Lausanne. However, he took part in the project for the Annonciade in Saint Tropez, a town he loved all his life.
He exhibited all over Europe and the world after the war, and died in 1949 in Gassin.
