Style and technique of artist Édouard Marcel Sandoz

Sandoz is part of the art nouveau style, in the materials he uses (bronze, gilded elements, marbles) but also in the subjects he chooses to depict and the curves he uses to sculpt his porcelain and bronzes.

The life of Sandoz

Édouard Marcel Sandoz (1881-1971), a Swiss artist, became a leading figure in the 20th-century art world. He soon moved to Paris to attend classes at the École des Beaux-Arts, taught in particular by Antonin Mercié and Jean-Antoine Injalbert. He loved to sculpt animals, and his works often feature rabbits, fennecs and birds. He creates many table services, including suites of salt and pepper shakers, carafes and teapots. For these objects, he works with Limoges and Sèvres porcelain. He also works with bronze and marble, materials with which he creates slightly larger models. His father, Édouard Sandoz, was the founder of the chemical and pharmaceutical company Sandoz (now Novatis). He therefore has a background in chemistry, which is indispensable when working with porcelain.

The legacy of Édouard Marcel Sandoz

The artist showcases a new way of working with porcelain, imbibing art nouveau and adding lots of color. His batch of fuchsia-pink salt and pepper shakers with golden lines bears witness to this bold mix, which has proved popular with the public. Today, his works are highly sought-after on the art market. Some of his works are scattered around museums in France, but most of his output is in private collections.

Recognizing the artist's signature

Sandoz's works are rarely signed. If they are, he signs when engraving the bronze. However, it's still important to have your work appraised.
