Mahmoud Said : painting Egypt

Mahmoud Said (1897-1964) was an Egyptian painter born in Alexandria.

His father held the position of Prime Minister of the country at his birth. He had a happy childhood and received a quality education. In 1919, he obtained a degree in French law, and moved to Paris to continue his studies. He visited many museums in Europe and took painting lessons.

On his return to Egypt, he joined the Cairo School of Fine Arts while working at the Alexandria Public Prosecutor's Office, having qualified as a judge. He contributed to the renewal of twentieth-century art in Egypt, and in 1937 managed to exhibit at New York's Rockerfeller, then at the Egyptian pavilion of the Exposition des Arts et des Techniques Appliqués à la Vie Moderne.

When he married, he drew much of his inspiration from his wife in his paintings, then from his children. The depiction of women in general would remain a central subject in his work.

He also depicted peasants and scenes from everyday life in his country.

Mahmoud Said died in 1964 in Egypt.
